I completed nearly 4,000 target words today (not counting the roughly 200 words that came in over the transom on a rush basis), and I feel pretty good.

I finally got fed up with the limitations of the Elementary Linux distribution that I had installed on my old work machine (the one I used before Yquem/Montaigne), so I installed both Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux 16.04 on the unit in a "dual boot" configuration, so I could load either operating system upon power-up.

The Ubuntu installation was perfectly okay—a far cry from when this same machine, running the 14.04 version of the operating system, tried to upgrade to the new version automatically, unsuccessfully and with disastrous results, which eventually resulted in my giving the Elementary distribution a whirl—but while Windows booted cleanly to a desktop, it quickly became apparent to me that the Microsoft operating system was totally and completely unaware of certain important machine-specific files called "drivers" that enable hardware functionality.

Once I established Internet connectivity, I found out that I could either invest a chunk of time tracking down the drivers I needed, or I could get Windows 10 installed for free at any Microsoft Store, but only until somewhere near the end of the month. Fortunately, as there is just such a Store not far away, at the Baybrook Mall, the choice was pretty easy.

So I drove over and, before anything else, they checked the machine to make sure it could run the Windows 10 software. According to the diagnostic, it could, so I had them go ahead and install Windows 10 on top of my fresh Windows 7 installation, which they did within a couple of hours.

They even left my installation of Ubuntu alone, which I really did not expect to happen, but was a nice touch.

The reason I'm doing all of this is to create a "road warrior" machine; one that I can not only take along with me when and if I travel, but one that I can use to do real work.

So far, so good.

Part of my perceived progress in this regard has been aided by referring to the list of pretty much every change I've made to my work machine since I reinstalled Windows 10 on it while recovering from the recent Big Crash™. This includes not only a list of the software that I've installed, but all of the little tweaks that I've had to make and the odd files that I've had to salvage to replicate—to the greatest extent possible—my old work environment.

In between translations, today, I've been wrapping my head around a way to make the process of copying the files I need for travel be as seamless as possible. All previous attempts over the years have fallen short of the mark, to one degree or another.

But not right now. I've put in a full day, and it's time to rest.

Cheers...
