The manhole cover shuddered...

The couple that rented our place in Webster apparently split up a little while back, which we only found out about when the July rent didn't show up in our bank account.

A phone call assured us the check would be mailed, which it was, and it cleared, which helped restore my faith in people, whereupon I recalled that when we signed the lease with our tenants, I had my fingers crossed, because their credit score was not, shall we say, awe-inspiring.

We met the young man at the house today, and he was pretty straight up about things, showing us places where the carpet had been damaged, for example, and I concluded, on a tentative basis, that I was in the presence of an individual who really and truly wanted to do the right thing. With that realization, we easily negotiated terms for the remaining two months of the lease that were satisfactory to both parties.

I look forward to the beginning of August, if for no other reason than to check the mail during the first few days of the month.
