I like how you copped to the "what the hell, the statue's talking", and then in the same breath blew it off as unimportant, so you could get down to the important philosophizin'. :)
I've been in a lot of backyards, and seen a lot more of those homemade ponds done poorly than well. My advice is to use bigger rocks than you think you need around the edges - gives it more permanence - and to not let the maintenance fall off. It's your backyard project, though, have fun with it!
Although, is the HOA gonna give you crap about it?
