An attempt to make a VHD image of the drive in my machine was unsuccessful. A try at Windows Backup died while attempting to make a system image.

Right now, I'm backing up my Documents folder and intend to have my D: drive (my "data" drive") back up while I'm at taiji.

Natalie has graciously offered me her laptop, but the cost of getting it here in an expeditious manner might rival the cost of going out and buying a new machine.

I've spent some time trying to do a translation—more precisely, a revision of a translation—on my Linux laptop using LibreOffice. The application opens up the Word file with no direct yelps, but the blessed thing has been reformatted slightly, to where doing the job this way seems a game not worth the candle.

Fortunately, I've found a one-liner that gives me information on all the apps I've ever installed on Montaigne, which is my machine's name. With any luck, I have copies of all the application installation files for the programs I use all the time.

I wonder if MemoQ runs on a Mac?

Cheers...

:( :(

Not the outcome you want when you've invested so much work.

Do you make a practice of emailing yourself the work-in-progress as you go? It won't help you if the application goes down with your computer, but you won't lose work you've already done.

I have to say, I've become totally dependent on dropbox. All of my active work files reside in dropbox, together with app/program settings. Its probably one of the best uses of $99 a year I can come up with.

...is this second time in a year (two years?) that you have to buy a new machine?

Well, ultiamtely, I'm pretty sure I haven't lost any work, as I have SpiderOak shadowing my file activity, and I do a lot of "by hand" backups with programs like SyncBack. The thing that's going to hurt is reinstalling Windows and all the applications.

I SpiderOak, and am about to find out how easy/not easy it is to recover from something like this, but only after I reinstall Windows.

I appreciate the links. The information there makes it clear that switching over to a Mac is not really feasible for me, especially since I run some other software that wouldn't recognize a Mac (or vice versa) on a good day with unlimited visibility.

Have to? No.

I believe I acquired Montaigne in December 2012. Not a bad run for a relatively inexpensive "ultrabook."

Ah. I have to agree with this, especially for a machine that you appear to have been using, like we say "в хвост и в гриву".

I probably remember you being stressed about replacing your previous one well enough to think it was not so long ago because there never is a good time for a vital tool to stop working.
