The weather flacks predict anywhere between 4 and 12 inches of snow or more overnight, so in addition to the usual craziness that passes for daily life around here, we made sure to stop by the grocery store and stock up on victuals, completely upsetting Galina's master plan of systematically consuming the contents of the refrigerator in preparation for...what? Cleaning it? I don't know. Anyway, whatever the point was of that plan, it'll have to wait.

I started translating late in the day, due mostly to having attended church in the morning. Currently, out of 20,000 words in the assignment - code named the "OCR Nightmare" - I've done about 10%. Hopefully, tomorrow we'll be snowed in, which will allow me to get a good leg up on the work.

The job has earned its name due to the fact that the client has run the original document through an OCR program, and then through its TRADOS database, and packaged the result for distribution to the translator. Since no effort was made to proofread the OCRed text, it's well-nigh impossible to process the document without either a printout or a second monitor nearby, displaying the original PDF. The overabundance of strange formatting contributes its own unique poison to the mix.

I must process 3,000 source words each day to make the deadline, not counting what I suspect will be a half a day of reformatting and press checking, so I better not slack off over the next few days. And if I can safely press myself to exceed that quota, I must, to allow for any welcome influx of additional work, as so far, January is looking positively anorexic, and we can't have that, can we?

The quick-step, press-conference version of the Golden Globes might not be so good for the glitz-and-glamour industry, but it sure moved at a smart pace that kept my attention off translation, at least for a while. (Apropos of which, we really need to move the television out of my office. We really, really do...)

Cheers...
