(Another in a continuing series of public-minded whines observations about the fundamental unfairness of life, etc., but bleatings reflections that nevertheless might well find their way into publication some day. Nay, not just someday, but right now...)

Damn. Those Russians know how to pack a lot of meaning into one word.

Tiny little language is, maybe, compensation for the humongous things that Russians make? Tsar Bomba, that gigantic bell with the chunk out of it (Tsar Bell?) and the Hermitage, etc.

Nah. Actually, Russian expands when translating from English, despite the use of articles and such in the latter. Mostly, it has to do with having to be more explicit in one's expression.

The poster child for this is the sentence "IBM signed the contract," which in literate Russian would be rendered "Представители фирмы 'IBM' подписали контракт," which adds a word.

Interestingly, translation back into English can expand even further. A literal back-translation of the Russian is "Representatives of the IBM company signed the contract," which is what some (mediocre, IMO) into-English translators would write.

Somehow, I get the feeling this is TMI, especially since rlippincott was, I think, pulling my leg.

Nice videos, BTW. Someday, I shall work up the gumption to do something like that.

Not really TMI for me, as I find it fascinating.

I think I kind of get the complexities of it, too, because I can read French nearly-fluently (I can't 100% "think" in French). I can "translate" French passages to English without any problem and can listen to a conversation in French and be able to restate specifically what was said in English. But my French composition is significantly less well developed. I can get by if the person to whom I am speaking or writing is very forgiving and patient.

I think, at least, that's a somewhat analogous phenomenon in that Language 1-to-Language 2 is not just the reverse of Language 2-to-Language 1.
