Back on webster...

Attempting to open Word files this morning got me a series of messages, to the effect that the files I was trying to open were "not available."
My initial reaction was alarm, as these were work files, but it turned out they were where they belonged and were of the appropriate size. I just couldn't open them. Neither Word nor Windows gave a hint as to why the files were not available; they just weren't.
Going online netted a hint: Perhaps there was a problem with my antivirus?
Indeed, there was. It wasn't running, and nothing I could do would make it run. So I reinstalled it.
Whereupon, after rebooting, hammer wouldn't connect to the Internet any more (to update the antivirus database), and the only way to tell there's something actually wrong on the computer (as opposed to, say, a dead set of DNS servers) was to attempt to go online using webster.
Which isn't exactly right, as opening the Network and Sharing Center on hammer would have indicated - albeit with no explanation - that my Internet connectivity was "limited."
<sigh>
I guess I need to spend more time "under the hood" with my operating system.
Cheers...
