Circumstances so arranged themselves this past weekend that Galina and I found ourselves on the road to visit Mike and Karen in Parker, Colorado on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate.

We were most of the way up the Wolf Creek Pass on Highway 160 when it became clear that the snowpack was not agreeing with our car, so we made a U-turn and went back twenty-some-odd miles to Pagosa and veered south, down Highway 84, intending to drive to Chama, New Mexico, and go around the snow.

At Chama, we turned left onto Highway 17 and headed toward Alamosa. The road was mostly clear, with a few slick patches.

We hit one of those slick patches.

Fortunately, the physics and geometry of what happened caused us to spin and impact the "mountain" side of the road instead of spin and go off the, uh, "go down the mountain" side of the road.

I strolled over to the other side of the road after extricating myself from the car and looked down, and confirmed it would have been a rather long climb up.

A snow plow came by a few minutes later and the operator was kind enough to haul us out of our predicament. We headed back down the mountain, toward Chama. Slowly.

As I prepared to make the turn back up 84, Galina observed that we were almost a third of the way from home to Santa Fe, which had crossed my mind, too, as I activated the directional signal. We pulled off to the side of the road, conferred briefly, and decided to go to Santa Fe. From there, we could head to Albuquerque if we so wished, and eventually head for Parker via I-25.

We stopped in Santa Fe, had a nice dinner, and retired for the night. Yesterday morning, we slept in, and eventually got on the road, headed for Parker.

I had never traveled that portion of I-25 before, and from what I recall seeing yesterday, my prior life had not suffered much nor will my future life profit as a result. Blowing snow near Colorado Springs slowed us down some, but eventually, we gained our objective.

It was then that I realized just how poorly prepared I was for this visit, in terms of work and connectivity. However, having taken care of the one item due for today - on a Mac, which about tripled my overall time using a Mac for serious work - I'm not going to sweat what I can't fix.

More later, when I have time and connectivity.

Cheers...
