I ran across my mother's diary for 1935 while looking for my iPod. I still haven't found the thing, but my mother's entry for the day is 75 years old today.

As it turns out she went to the movies with her mother and saw a double feature consisting of The Pursuit of Happiness, about a Hessian mercenary who deserts during the Revolutionary War, and Wake Up And Dream, a story of vaudeville success designed as a vehicle for a singer named Russ Colombo, who died before the film was released. Both films were released around the beginning of October 1934.

Continued my mother:
Nobody came to see me, no one sent me any flowers. It was just a quiet day, January 1st, 1935.
I might echo her last two observations three-quarters of a century later. No flowers, a quiet day, but Natalie and Robert did stop by to see Galina and me.

Galina and I slept in this morning. I was a complete slug-a-bed, rising nearly at 10 am, even though my head hit the pillow at somewhere around 12:10 am this morning. We puttered around the house until Natalie and Robert came by later in the afternoon, at which point we applied ourselves to the task of removing furniture and carpet from the upstairs.

After partaking of traditional black-eyed pea soup (a hit with Robert), Galina and I settled down to watch The Dish with Sam Neill and another Sherlock Holmes dramatization featuring Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke. I enjoyed the Neill movie, though I notice, as time goes by, that watching stories about space exploration now tend to engender some degree of psychic pain along with any residual pride. Ah, well...

Now, to where could my iPod have disappered?

Cheers...

That entry makes me want to go back in time and hug your grandmother.

Well, I experience that feeling, too, from time to time <grin>, but then can't help but wonder: what's so special about going to a double-feature with one's daughter?

Cheers...

Everything! I can't wait until I can do things with my son. First, of course, he's got to be born.
