Epson printer/scanners have been annoyingly designed so that if any one of the six ink cartridges is low on ink, the unit will no longer scan.
While potentially profitable over the short term, my long-term solution is to never, ever buy another Epson printer.
I just learned the hard way, however, that eventually, even ink cartridges that are not low on ink will get that way even if you never use the printing function.
The only other scanner currently available to me is the fairly reliable (but old) Lexmark X6100 unit I bought at an estate sale, but as far as I can tell, no drivers for it exist for Windows 7.
So now, I'm taking some time out of my leisurely (not!) schedule to see if I can install the Windows 2000 version of the X6100 software in my virtual Windows 2000 setup under VMWare.
Wish me luck.
Cheers...
UPDATE: Hey! It works! (With the added plus - I think - of being able to run the original Lexmark "All-In-One" software, which I hadn't been able to do on my Vista system.)
