It's a gas being, basically, across the street from the Phoenicia Specialty Foods store.

I remember the place from when it was located on this side of Westheimer, in a sort of irregular space with high-ceilings, back when a trip to this side of town was (for me) a real expedition from Clear Lake. There were packages from everywhere, with representation from an assortment of Arab countries, with a few labels in Cyrillic mixed in.

The place sells all sorts of stuff, and it's the kind of exotic stuff I like, the range of which is normally compressed into a couple of feet of shelf space at conventional supermarkets. Buckwheat, yogurt, kefir, figs, pilmeni, and other specialty items.

Today, I laid in a package of pilmeni, for when Galina and Alla come down from New York. I also bought a package of lamb kidneys, which were sitting just pretty as you please between the lamb testicles and the lamb tongues, to the left of the lamb heads and to the right of the lamb livers.

About half the package of kidneys is cooking right now in a frying pan, in a sort of stew with onions, shiitake mushrooms, and bok choi. Meanwhile, I am wondering why Shiloh refused to eat a small leftover of a trimmed kidney.

More later, if I survive.

Cheers...

P.S. Shiloh had no problem eagerly scarfing down part of a cooked kidney. She was never this picky before, hmmm.
