Well, I had relatively little trouble falling asleep at 3 pm. I woke at 5 pm and again at 7 pm... something must be on a two-hour or so cycle inside my head. I woke for the last time at 9:30 pm and didn't think it worth while to try to squeeze out any more Z's for the "night."
Between air-to-ground chatter, I've been leafing through a book on Adobe Acrobat. The program seems straightforward, but it is important to keep in mind that text editing capabilities in the program are very limited. If you want to edit text, don't use Adobe. On the other hand, there appear to be a lot of useful new features in the 5.0 version.
The freelance job I was supposed to start on today apparently was put on hold, which evokes mixed feelings on my end. On the one hand, it's never pleasant to have a job go on hold; on the other, I can use all of the little time off I get, if for nothing else but to spend on "maintenance" chores around the house (laundry, cooking, cleaning, etc.) Too, the news clarifies why no FedEx truck pulled up to the house this morning.
I spent a little time around the start of the shift finishing off my column for the next issue of The SlavFile, which is the journal of the ATA's Slavic Languages Division. I sent it off, too, which is the important part.
My last column addressed, among other things, an idea I had for a Slashdot-style glossary that would allow participants to contribute not only terminology, but also to comment on other other entries. The idea here is that "correct" entries and comments would rise to the top, while the rest would languish quietly, out of the way of grown-ups. Predictably, nobody had any reaction to the idea, except for the division Administrator.
The subject of this quarter's column was last year's trip home, which included a visit to my old high school (chronicled in my LJ posts on Going Home... and Making like a a yo-yo...).
Cheers...

Date: 2001-09-07 11:54 am (UTC)for a link to what I mean.
You pick a term and define it. Multiple definitions can be entered, with the best ones (theoretically) floating to the top. I don't think there's really a discussion thread thing built in to the system, but I think people do enter comments in the place where they are supposed to put additional definition information.
The whole point of Everything and Everything2 was that people could enter definitions, better definitions, corrected definitions, and it will all eventually work out with the best possible one.
I think there are a couple of places where Everything/2 could have been set up better, for example I think people should be able to request definitions for terms not in the database and have the requests appear on the front page for others to answer.
I don't use the thing very much so I don't know all of its features. I think it is close to what you're looking for, though. Perhaps if whatever organization put up a little (and I'm talking not much at all) monitary encouragement to the Everything2 developers they could get some features added on short order.

Date: 2001-09-08 12:06 am (UTC)My first impression is that its theme closely resembles that of the H2G2 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/) site in the UK that was acquired by the BBC a little while ago, and it has a similar long learning curve in terms of being able to use the site well.
It is, however, not what I'm looking for. Starting with something that might be the result of a query to, for example, this page (http://www.tti-corp.com/NASAsearch.html), I'd like to have the capability of clicking on an entry and seeing additional information, such as who entered the term, and what (if anything) other people had to say about it.
I suspect it's actually an easy thing to do... once the database design is figured out.
Cheers...

Date: 2001-09-08 12:07 am (UTC)Actually, although the position I'm filling is that of "air-to-ground interpreter," the loop we listen to is called "space-to-ground."
Cheers...
