A whimsey...

A just-in time check hit the mailbox yesterday, so after taking care of some short files this morning, Galina and I headed for the bank.
The bank is situated at the northeast corner of an intersection with perfectly horrid traffic flow, where going north, toward home, involves first turning east onto the intersecting road, driving about a half mile, turning left across traffic onto a road that heads southwest about the same distance, and then turning left again onto the road home (assuming the intersection is clear).
But today, we just kept heading west, until we eventually ended up in Jackson Heights.
Back around the time I was in college, my parents developed a technique for going into the city that involved driving to Jackson Heights and then taking the subway into Manhattan. It was much more convenient and less expensive than taking the LIRR or trying to find a parking spot in Manhattan.
Unfortunately, the technique has gotten harder over the years. Today's foray made it clear that better planning is necessary, because there were no parking spaces to be found that didn't involve a meter.
Still, it was a pleasant trip. The old neighborhood sure has changed.
