I didn't quite get as much done as yesterday, but between yesterday and today, I've made some good gains against the schedule I proposed Sunday regarding the the "State of the Plate."

The idea of a standing desk pretty much got left in Pagosa, along with my old clunker of a metal desk, and I've been using Natalie's old desk that she bought at IKEA some time back for work since coming to Seabrook. However, the idea is of standing while keyboarding is alive again—this time driven by recent news that Galina caught on the tube, to the effect that sitting while working apparently shaves off minutes of life faster than smoking.

A long time ago, one of the first Perl programs I wrote was a CGI script that would take a string as input and output a nicely HTML-formatted table of lines in a text file containing glossary entries, along with a new input field for the next search. I added a number of bells and whistles to it, such as being able to choose a case-sensitive or -insensitive search, and making sure the script (when I put it on a public server) could only be run from said server.

I tried looking for that script yesterday, and eventually found an old copy of it, but decided to first see if anyone had created anything of the kind written in PHP. They had, so I downloaded it and then spent a little time looking at the code to get a general feel for what was going on (or as much as a general feel as could be whipped up by someone like me, who's a relative PHP newbie).

This morning, as a get-my-brain-working warmup, I loaded the script onto my Raspberry Pi setup and gave it a whirl. It didn't work. I looked at the error logs and figured out that several variables in the source were not defined (which made me wonder how this could ever have been working code, but I pressed on, nonetheless). It turns out some changes have occurred in the language since the code had been originally written. I made the appropriate changes and—shazam!—the script works.

I will probably still give updating my old Perl dinosaur a try, but not immediately-right-now. Right now, I've got to get ready for my tai chi class...
