The air that snuck in through the open door as I let the dogs out a few minutes ago prompted me to stick a thermometer outside for a bit, just to see how cold it was.

After the numbers stabilized, the device reported 31.3°F (-0.389°C).

B-r-r-r-r!

For out neck of the woods (and particularly with us being pretty close to water, i.e., less than 5 klicks from Galveston Bay), that's cold!

Are you like me? I always feel guilty remarking on the chilly temperatures to people who are experiencing highs in the negative numbers. But, like you, it's dang cold for us. We also reached 31°F for several days last month. That's at least ten degrees colder than it usually goes. Ice on still water and swirls of frost on cars are a novelty for us. Ironically, the ultra-frigid weather in the east is what gives SoCal its picture perfect 75° F days. We begin to curse them for their tedium!

Lucky you!
It got up to +36C here yesterday. Today the heat wave has gone down, it's overcast and +22C. Positively fresh. :)

Mind you, it's a whole lot better than January 2013. Apparently, the scientists had to add another colour band to their weather charts - deep purple, for +54C. Listening to anti-climate change arguments just doesn't convince one anymore... http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2013/01/17/3670931.htm
