Saw some films recently. Here's what I thought...

La grade bellezza (The Great Beauty) (2013, via Netflix). Started out hating it, ended up watching it through to the end. There were places where it hit me hard, emotionally. Not surprisingly, it made me want to go visit Rome in the worst way.

Emperor (2012, via Netflix). Easy to watch, although the arc relating the main character's personal loss does not make this a "feel-good" movie in any sense of the word. While I had previously read much about some of what was presented in the film, I cannot help, however, feeling that the overall picture drawn is skewed in typical Hollyweird fashion.

Mr. Morgan's Last Love (2013, via Netflix, as Last Love). I can watch Michael Caine at any time, knowing that I'll come away entertained. This film was not a disappointment. That said, while there were, in my opinion, very strong moments in this movie, the overall effect was not what I had hoped for. I like happy endings. FWIW, it was good to see Gillian Anderson on the screen.

In other news, the name of the "pen pal" that I received at the IBM pavilion at the 1964–65 World's Fair in Flushing Meadow, New York, popped into my mind recently, several months after I tried, without success, to recall his name. I seem to recall the "common interest" I had specified at the time was "stamp collecting." Google yields no joy with the name, but given—ahem!—our age, perhaps that's not too surprising.

A few weeks ago, after generally turning my thoughts, from time to time and for my own nefarious purposes, to the first home that I really was aware of—an apartment on 79th Street in Jackson Heights, Queens—I experienced a sudden recollection of some detail in the wrought iron of the bannister in the stairwell.

It's just uncanny.

Gotta get the house ready for a visit from Galina's sister.

The day's bag was about 3,500 words. Still plenty on the plate.

Getting some sleep won't hurt, either.

Cheers...
