I found an interesting article that suggests the so-called "10,000-hour rule" (to the effect that so many hours of deliberate practice leads to world-class performance) may not be necessarily so. I'll need to look at it again, however, as I didn't really have the time to give it a thorough read-through the first time around.

Having fun, mostly, with "training mode" at lichess.org, a free-as-in-beer chess server. My training rating is something astronomical, but stubbornly refuses to go up any further, principally because of the site's draconian scoring (no partial credit and strict adherence to the idea of only giving credit for the shortest mate, when there is a mate on the board). I keep thinking I've found better moves, but it took me until today to actually find a mating combination that both works and is not longer than the one found by the site's AI. I'll have more to say as time goes by.

I got a huge amount of work done and more work came in the door.
