Galina and I just finished our Thanksgiving dinner, which this year consisted of New Zealand leg of lamb. During the traditional phone call to the folks up north, I find that they are partaking of duck on this festive day. Somewhere, I suppose, there is a pair of gobblers breathing a little easier.

The work day went smoothly. Parking at JSC was particularly easy to find today <grin>. I got through all of my documents a little early today, and the duty back room ops planner let me go about a half hour early.

If nothing else, this assignment has allowed me to become familiar with Microsoft Office Binders. It's a rather neat idea, which allows you to bring together a group of files into one package, and then deal with them as one entity. I ran into a couple of "gotchas" in learning to use this feature, though.

First, if you highlight a file and then click on the printer, the default behavior is to print all of the files in the binder. (I found that out the, um, hard way. :^) Fortunately, there is a radio button on the printer dialog box that lets you print only selected files, and I was able to find it fairly quickly, so there was no problem there. On the other hand, I found the task of "extracting" a file from a binder to be a bit more difficult, although I eventually doped that one out, too.

We've been sneakernetting files back and forth, since I still do not have a username and password to access the appropriate network branch. Another side-effect of this lack is the inability to hit the internal MCC web site and refer to the so-called "onboard data files" that describe how to do everything on the station. The documents I translate make frequent references to these files, and not being able to refer to them makes my job harder and degrades the quality of the final product. But I'm starting to babble about work, and I shouldn't be doing that after hours.

I need to learn to relax. I also need to get into shape. (Yeah, I know, "round" is a shape...but you know what I mean!)

To that end, I've been pretty steadily taking long walks in the evenings. I am not, however, even approaching the two hours per day of exercise that I'd like to work up to, though I am limiting my use of elevators and taking the stairs more often. The two hour figure is arbitrary (probably influenced by the fact that astronauts and cosmonauts must exercise two hours per day if they are to remain healthy for their return to the ground), but I figure if I can get to the point where I spend two hours per day just away from "the cares that are" and burn some of those calories, it might help me get used to relaxing and it will reduce the extra mass that I carry around with me.

Up next on the personal calendar: develop a list of personal assets and liabilities (we're talking cash and stuff like that, not personality traits). I have a feeling I'll need it before too long, in conversations with bankers and other interested parties.

Cheers...
