As I unpacked my laptop this morning at the MCC, this huge wolf spider came out of the case along with the power supply. How it got into the pocket with the supply is a mystery, and the spider wasn't telling.

I don't know why, but spiders generally don't freak me out, so I don't have this overwhelming desire to kill every one I see. About the only spider I will destroy is the black widow, and only because it is poisonous and readily identifiable. (I saw my first actual black widow while in the North Carolina forest, courtesy of Uncle Sam. The red hourglass shape on the black body is a giveaway.)

At any rate, this morning, I took a moment to move this wolf spider over to a corner, where I figure it would have a fighting chance of surviving among various papers dating from the Peloponesian War.

A little bit later, the area is transfixed by a sharp scream as the spider is spotted walking across the floor. Apparently, the animal's sense of wanderlust overcame its natural desire for safety. Before I could do or say anything, the spider was dispatched to the Great Woodshed in the Sky, to the refrain of "Look at the size of it!" emanating from members of the execution detail.

Ah, well. You can't win them all.

Cheers...
