One more down...
Dec. 4th, 2000 03:17 pmThis morning's shift went pretty smoothly, all things considered. While our work is related to the fact that there's a Shuttle flight going on, we actually are in the MCC to support the Station team (which is different from the Shuttle team). There are actually two different flight control rooms for this: the Station folks operate out of the so-called "blue" FCR (pronounced "ficker"), while the Shuttle team works out of the "white FCR."
So while folks in the blue FCR were wincing a bit last night as they watched the solar array deploy with many a jerk and spasm, it was the folks in the white FCR that had to figure out how to solve the problem of deploying the second array (a pin holding it closed didn't respond to a computer command that would have started the deployment), as well as the problem of tensioning the loose solar array that did deploy.
Upon my return home, I sat down and wrote the review of the Slavic Language Division's distinguished speaker lecture in a couple of hours with little problem. I credit that to the fact that I spend a little bit of time every day writing in this LiveJournal of mine. The habit of writing on a regular basis soon makes all kinds of writing come easier, so there is an added benefit past simply accumulating a series of entries in a journal of some kind.
It's that time again. I'm on again in 8 hours, so it's time to hit the rack. I've found that, if i turn on the computer in the room, the hum of the machine does a good job of masking outside noise (particularly from the four-lane road that's only a couple of hundred yards away). To make sure I put those computer cycles to good use, I generally point my Napster browser at some interesting tracks (yesterday, I downloaded what appear to be some old-time radio shows). It's win-win-win all the way around.
The solution to yesterdays's problem - at least a first cut at a solution - is to put off renting this place for a month. That'll let me work through December, do what has to be done (businesswise) in January, and spreads what needs to be accomplished in terms of relocation and renovation over a broader, less stressful time frame.
Good night!
Cheers...
