Today's sim was a "textbook" sim, according to the comments from the Russian training staff, and I'd have to agree. Some things came up during the sim that caused the control team to delay the simulated docking by one orbit, but otherwise everything went pretty smoothly.

Came home, saw Lee. She has started to read the book on C. We had a dinner of sausage and sauerkraut (which never fails to remind me of my late brother, except tonight's meal was sans the kilogram of fat my brother liked to include in the recipe). We watched Onegin.

Having read the original (or most of it) in Russian and two different translations (Nabokov's and Charles Johnston's), I am well aware of the story line. It's actually a pretty simple, straightforward story (that takes a couple of bad bounces off of old memories as it echoes in my mind, but I digress...). The thing that made the whole thing a work of art was Pushkin's talent as a poet.

Then again, doubtless some of Wm. Shakespeare's plots were pretty pedestrian, but they live anyway, thanks to his talent. The same is true for much fiction, no doubt. Perhaps someday I shall also read the translation by James Fallen and, if time really lies heavy on my hands, the one by Doug Hofstadter.

I've been pretty good about keeping my cool for the past few days. I don't recall really getting angry since my last report here on LJ....until tonight. Galina and I had words over the phone; Lee says they could probably be heard 4 doors down the street (kid likes to exaggerate). We've both been under a lot of pressure lately, and we've been apart, and it was uncanny how we both blurted "sorry" at each other, followed almost immediately by "miss you" and "love you." (No, it's not something we've developed over the years...and this is the first time in living memory we've yelled at each other like this. I'm not terribly proud of myself for my outburst, either.)

Another sim tomorrow, and then air-to-ground on Friday. Saturday I have off, which is really kind of unbelievable, but I'm not complaining. Then it'll be air-to-ground all of next week, and then...

home.

Cheers...
