Goings-on...
Jun. 5th, 2001 10:03 amAs I lay down last night, I could still feel tension all through my body, and thought it'd take forever to fall asleep. Silly me. I was out like a light in about two minutes. Dreamless sleep, as usual (or at least I don't remember any).
As I wrote last night's entry, FreeBSD was finishing its installation on the machine that used to serve as my mail server, web server, and firewall to the Internet down in Houston. The install went well, much better than on the Pentium-based box down in Texas. The user interface reminds me a lot of my earlier Linux experiences, especially with regard to user privileges (e.g., my user account can't mount the CD drive, though 'root' can do it for me). I'm sure there will be other surprises, but I'm not out to find them.
Galina and I had words yesterday, while I was in my office working on the translation. I had opened my browser to search for a troublesome term on the Runet (Russian Internet), and had found one (count 'em...) relevant hit, when Galina took a look at my screen and got really upset with me. She wouldn't say why; she wasn't talking to me.
This morning, she asks me why I'm sitting there last night with "Sick of your wife? Walk on the wild side!" flashing on my screen.
Say what? And then it hits me. Russian banner ads, even on "mainstream" sites (and I was searching Rambler), tend to comprise a lot of ads for sex sites. Being a native-born slob, I have a lifetime of experience filtering out advertising, so I didn't even see the ad, at least not consciously.
Ye gods. How easy it is to be misunderstood. You don't have to do much.
Gotta go get back to work.
Cheers...
