Another parting...
Jun. 23rd, 2001 11:12 pmEver since we heard about the flooding of our storage space in Houston, Galina and I have known that one of us would have to go down there and take care of that little thorn in our side... and a few others.
Among them is the Pearland house. We sank a lot of money into that house, and we need to get that money back now. While it sure is convenient to have the house to stay at when I'm in Houston working a flight, I'm thinking it'd be just as convenient to have a hotel room to go to when I am there. And renting the house is not an option, either, as the cash flow generated by a renter wouldn't be enough to take care of more pressing issues.
Anyway, the point of my freelancing is to not have to go places to work, at least not for 5-6 weeks at a time. It causes me and Galina to lose momentum with the store, and while the rate of payment is attractive, the situation where I work for primarily one client makes me ever more dependent on that client.
Since putting my mind to it, I've found two new clients and reactivated one more. If I can repeat the process several more times, I'll be back at the point I was 5 years ago when I stopped freelancing and went in-house to work for my former employer. At about that point, I'll have to start to seriously think about adding translation staff, but I'm far, far away from that point yet.
We spent much of the day at the shop moving things around, and then came home and watched 12 Monkeys. Galina will probably leave in the morning and be back next weekend. This will be a particularly stressful week for us all, but I'm sure we'll come through with flying colors.
Cheers...
