Well, I'm on the Internet with 'bagger', my Linux eSlate.

The default installation of Netscape looked pretty pathetic, so I tried to run Mozilla, but it hadn't been installed. So, I tracked it down and installed the rpm, and...

Here I am.

Not only does Mozilla actually work better than Netscape, but it automagically recognized the Cyrillic link to my Russian LJ friends and displayed it correctly. (Netscape makes do with a bunch of '?' place-holders.)

This is usable... yes it is.

I finally stopped on page 63 of the edit job, but the good news is that most of the remaining changes are pretty simply... mostly new and revised numbers.

Off to bed, methinks, for another early start tomorrow.

Cheers...

No idea...

This morning was very productive. I finished an 8,000-word document.

Just in time, too.

I have, as it turns out, an 87-page document to incorporate edits into, due 3 pm my time tomorrow. The edits don't look very extensive, but if I spend an average of 5 minutes per page, the job will still take me just over 7 hours.

Eminently do-able.

I chatted with a tech support operator from eMachines earlier on. I asked what the horizontal and vertical scan rates were for the LCD screen. The response: the tech had no idea.

I am not entirely convinced the information will be useful to me, but I can't help think that somehow, the X software is picking out an incorrect mode line from the configuration file, and that there might be a better way to set up the software.

Anyway... rest time is over... gotta go see about some pages.

Cheers...

I found a page on Google devoted to installing Mandrake Linux on an eSlate, so I figured "Why not try to install the 7.2 I have on the shelf?"

Indeed. My experience installing Red Hat on the eSlate the other day showed me that doing something as simple (and unfortunately, not so intuitive) as turning off the CPU's cache can make all the difference, from the point of view of installation.

So, not having any valuable files at risk, I went and installed Mandrake 7.2 over Red Hat 7.1. I followed the instructions on the page cited above.

What can I say? X Windows works like a champ (at least I can move and resize windows). Now I can go download LogJam from somewhere, maybe.

I am currently 56 pages into my edit. I figure I'll get another 15 or so pages done and I'll call it a night. Dinner tonight was cooked by Drew, and consisted of giant shrimp with all sorts of goodies (basil, sun-dried tomatoes, garlic) on a bed of linguine. Umm.

Cheers...
