Well, I'm on the Internet with 'bagger', my Linux eSlate.

The default installation of Netscape looked pretty pathetic, so I tried to run Mozilla, but it hadn't been installed. So, I tracked it down and installed the rpm, and...

Here I am.

Not only does Mozilla actually work better than Netscape, but it automagically recognized the Cyrillic link to my Russian LJ friends and displayed it correctly. (Netscape makes do with a bunch of '?' place-holders.)

This is usable... yes it is.

I finally stopped on page 63 of the edit job, but the good news is that most of the remaining changes are pretty simply... mostly new and revised numbers.

Off to bed, methinks, for another early start tomorrow.

Cheers...

What version was the rpm?

One of the things about Mozilla is that it improves very greatly from day to day in the nightly releases that are automatically generated. You describe it as "usable", implying "ok", but perhaps one of the recent nightlies would impress you a bit more.

These days I run Mozilla as the main web browser on all of my computers, windows and Linux, simply because it seems to be better than Netscape AND IE. It just seems a snappier than any of the other two and I like the mail client.

And yeah, even though I can't read farsi, I do appreciate seeing the proper characters instead of question marks :)

I don't have the CD at hand, but the build is 2000083016, which I assume means it's from almost a year ago.

I'll have to check out the newer versions.

My standards for "usability" are a bit higher than merely "ok." The version of Mozilla on my eSlate appears to be something I'd feel confident using (as compared, say, to the pathetic Netscape browser, which has been relegated to the trash).

Cheers...

Wow, I'm actually surprised a build that old is usable. You're right in that the build id is a date, so that build is from around August... which was when Mozilla just began to start getting usable, as I remember.

I would suggest that you do go and get a recent build. A whole heck of a lot of progress has been made since then.

The latest builds are available from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/latest/, including a subdirectory appearantly of RedHat RPMs. Since these are nightlies, they are far from guaranteed to work.

The latest actual release is 0.9.2 and it's available from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozilla0.9.2/

Good luck.

Try using Galeon (:http://galeon.sourceforge.net"). It uses Mozilla as the rendering engine, but is lighter than the Mozilla shell. Galeon's my standard Web browser on Linux.

Yes, I'm noticing that Mozilla (even the new version I installed) is noticeably slow, particularly the mail portion when it comes to deleting messages.

OTOH, my understanding is that Galeon runs under GNOME, and since (a) Mandrake installed KDE by default, and (b) I don't have the time at present to bone up on what's involved in reconfiguring the machine for GNOME, I guess I'll make do for now.
Thanks for the tip, though.

Cheers...
