The best laid plans...
Aug. 20th, 2001 11:56 pmI'm not sure "laid" is the appropriate word for what happened to my plans today... something along those lines, though, might fit better.
An attempt to insert a flash memory card into the eSlate's PCMCIA slot ended in near disaster. On the VAIO - Sony, by the way, will honor its warrantee - when I insert the card, Windows hiccups briefly, installs a driver and then the card appears as another drive on my machine. Very convenient.
When I did it on the eSlate, Windows tried to install a driver that was already installed, and which conflicted with another system-level piece of software.
This was bad enough, but just at this time, my PalmPilot decided to start throwing exceptions, due probably to a new program that I'd loaded onto the unit.
So, between trying to boot my Windows box and trying to back up the databases on my Palm, I wasted a lot of time in the afternoon.
OTOH, I was able to pay my cellular bill, my electric bill, a delinquent tax bill (don't ask me how I missed it), drop by the credit union, and swing by the office. Except for having left my invoices at home (no biggie, I've faxed them since), the late afternoon turned out well.
Once home, I did one last load of wash and then manhandled the washer into the van. Right now, I am way too hungry - this after a sumptuous dinner of sushi - and I've got some spaghetti boiling.
I figure my fallback plan will be to get some sleep, then finish packing the van in the morning. I figure if I leave Houston at 11 am, I'll be no worse off than when I left Pagosa to start this boondoggle in the first place. I expect to be finished packing the van before 11, though, so I may be able to get on the road earlier.
I stopped by the B&N yesterday and picked up a book titled 1632, by Eric Flint. It's an alternative history, of sorts, relating the story of a small West Virginia community that is transported to another universe and into 17th century Germany at the height of the Thirty Years' War. I found it an absorbing read. The publisher, Baen Books, continues to put out tomes that I can count on for a pleasant diversion.
Spaghetti is boiling... gotta go.
Cheers...
