Or at least a movement in that direction!

Yesterday, Drew and I went to the store an hour early to move some stuff around in an attempt to improve organization.

Back when the boxes were in the back of the store, we had a mail stand with recesses that we used for occasional customers and for mail to be forwarded. When we move the boxes up in front of the counter, the stand remained where it was, mainly because we didn't think of moving it, and also because it supported a pair of shelves on the wall.

So, yesterday, we moved the stand in with the boxes while the shelves were shored up with 2x4s, and then I set about supporting the shelves with brackets. Among other things, I found that the walls between stores were built with studs on 24-inch centers, which was not good news. Eventually, though, I was able to put up two support brackets that are screwed into 2x4s that are, in turn, attached to studs.

The next step involved swapping the position of a utility table and the store desk. I'd removed the roll top from the desk a couple of days ago, since it served no purpose other than to obstruct the work area, and by swapping the desk and the utility table, I could then extend a leftover piece of plywood from the corner in which the safe is located out over the utility table. This would give me an area in which I could set up the computer and monitor (to face the desk, situated T-wise to the plywood), as well as the store's color copier, the scanner, the laminator (still in its box), the DSL router, etc.

What I call the "utility table" is actually a cabinet with six drawers and a top surface that's too low to comfortably work on. I cut a few sections of 2x4 to elevate the plywood above the utility table (the other end lies on the safe), leaving enough of a "shelf" to house the computer printer and several power strips, for now.

Previously, the computer and monitor had stood on a small piece of scrap plywood placed across two short file cabinets. With the equipment in place, that left me with a strip about 4 inches wide in which to do my work. With the computer and monitor moved to the new place, the scrap plywood could be dispensed with, the file cabinets moved together, and the safe rotated 90 degrees to allow the door to be opened fully and more conveniently.

(As I'm typing this, I'm wondering: this all makes sense to me, since I know what the layout was and is. I wonder how it may appear to someone not familiar with the layout?)

Anyway, today I have to deal with the stuff that ends up lying around after any major rearrangement.

I've been a couch potato for the past few nights. Last night, I saw The Rock with Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage. I like the movie, especially Connery's acting, particularly because I was in San Francisco during the time the film was being shot.

In fact, I was in California with my now-former boss before I signed on as an employee. The boss and I had spent some time at a potential client's office earlier in the day up near Sacramento (if memory serves), and decided to go down to The City for dinner.

The boss took me to Julius' Castle, a small restaurant about a stone's throw beneath the Coit Tower, located at the end of a cul-de-sac. The establishment, if I recall correctly, has dining rooms on several levels, and the view out of the windows is panoramic.

The food is pretty darn good, too. :^)

Anyway, with dinner over, we walk out the door and my boss grabs my arm and says, "Did you see what I saw?" I say no. She says, "That was Sean Connery back there!"

I say, "You're kidding!"

"Would I be standing here in a near faint if it weren't? Go take a look for yourself!" she said.

So I did. Quietly, I thought. I returned inside as if to ask directions, and glanced briefly at the gent who was about to be led upstairs.

It was, indeed, Sean Connery.

I have to admit my legs felt just a little rubbery at the moment, as he's always been one of my favorite actors.

The previous night, I watched Predator 2, and came away convinced that the impression I got the first time was no fluke: it is inferior to the original.

On Tuesday night, I watched A Shot in the Dark, with Peter Sellers and Elke Sommer, and despite the fact I was pretty tired, it was nonetheless pretty funny, up until the part where I fell asleep.

There, enough about television, except to say that I am disappointed to have learned (I forget where) that Chris Carter is pulling the plug on The X Files come May. The story I read said, basically, that Carter wants to shut the show down while it's still strong, and not after its ratings have tanked. (Is he fishing for fan reaction? I don't know, and am not motivated enough to care.) The story also noted that both Anderson and Duchovny are on board for a movie sequel to Fight the Future. The fact I remembered this item must mean I found it interesting, but I cannot say I'm champing at the bit in anticipation of a sequel.

Enough musing. Time to get ready for work!

Cheers...

We worked pretty much all day, but there is precious little to show for it. If we are to prosper, we need to find new and significant sources of constant revenue.

Another translation assignment has come in, this a 20,000-word construction standard, due Sunday evening the 27th. I think I will dawdle this evening, but starting tomorrow, I shall have to put some significant time in each evening (and all day Sunday, natch) to get this assignment done.

I also need to a do a bunch of accounting things for the store.

The back of the store is coming along. Most of the extra boxes we've had in the back have been flattened or trashed. I did my first reports with the new desk and computer setup and it's much better than what was in place earlier.

I'm going to go rest and recharge my internal batteries... it's going to be a pretty intense week coming up.

Cheers...
