Telecons...
Apr. 17th, 2002 06:34 am... can be so much fun. I've been on for about 15 minutes (it's 6:10 am) and the coordinator is still trying to get everyone hooked up (no answer on the Russian line, yet). Today's subject: telemetry.
* * * While I'm waiting...
Galina went to Farmington yesterday, to stock up on drinks for the store while I'm gone. This was after we found a screw in the front left tire, which had caused a slow-to-moderate leak. Drew injected some fix-a-flat into it and Galina then took the van down to New Mexico - against my better judgment - but as it turns out, things turned out. (She had the tire patched while she went shopping.)
While Galina was en route to Farmington, Drew went to get his tires rotated and balanced, in preparation for his drive to California. He left sometime during the night, with his buddy Sean riding shotgun to help while away those long hours. Hopefully, we'll see him late Friday, with Shannon and Huntur (and Sean, I guess :^).
Got another "Caesar" haircut yesterday and surprised myself in the mirror this morning. (Still no answer... been instructed to dial into another conference number... no Russians there, either... the connection is still in work...).
All checking accounts have taken major unexpected hits over the past few days... very depressing. Yesterday, though, my consistently-58-days-late client came through with a fairly sizeable check, so the situation is not as bleak as it was before the mail arrived yesterday. I do notice, however, looking at my receivables, that a couple of other clients seem to be edging past the standard 30-day payment terms. When they unload, things might start to look "normal" again.
(6: 25 am: Still no action on the telecon front... it's been nearly half and hour.)
I went to the local Radio Shack yesterday and laid out about $50 (total) for (1) a dingus that installs in the handset line of a modular phone, which in turn allows (2) a headset to be plugged in, allowing for hands-free operation.
I tried it out last night in a call to Feht, and it works well (as it's working now, except that there's just a whole lot of silence and a little paper-shuffling coming into my earphones... my microphone is muted to prevent my keyboard noise from going out). He suggested that, once I get back from Houston, we take some time and go over to Moab, Utah for some quiet time. I'd really like to.
(6:27 am: A conversation's going on with the conference coordinator right now... she'll try - once again - to hook up the Russian side. It may work, but in my experience, if comm is not established within the first 5 minutes or so, the telecon is hosed. Yep, the coordinator is back, saying she's getting an answering machine on the requested line. Again, I might add. The NASA side sends her off with another number... no joy...
... and the plug is officially... pulled. I've just hung up. )
I think this qualifies for the one-hour minimum.
Cheers...
