May. 30th, 2002 11:09 pmI finally got started with my current translation (which has to do with lightning protection, so there is some kind of very bad pun there) around 9 am, after taking Galina to the store and finishing the report that I started last night before going home.
I've decided to put a cap on it for the day, after having committed 7190 words to phosphor. That is a lot, by my normal standards, but the material is very straightforward, for the most part. I did end up chasing my tail a couple of times during the day to clarify the difference between молниеотвод and молниеприемник.
The former, if my research is correct can be rendered as the generic 'lightning protector', while I'm currently betting that the latter is very likely a 'lightning terminal'. It is extremely unlikely that молниеприемник is a 'receiver' of any kind in English (Google shows only a handful of instances of 'lightning receiver' used in Web documents, and many of those are from non-US sites), though it's clear that the purpose of this doohickey is to 'receive' the full brunt of a lightning discharge. A lighting rod is a kind of молниеприемник, but not the only kind, so 'lightning rod' won't work either.
In any event, the good news is that I've finished checking the work for consistent usage of translated terms (i.e., every instance of молниеприемник has been rendered as 'lightning terminal') so that if I do find I'm wrong with this term (or any other), fixing the fault will be relatively painless.
* * * We don't get too many calls, and I use my cell to make most of my calls, so we really hadn't noticed that our phone went dead until a few days ago. I finally got the lead out this morning and went out to the phone company's box and plugged in a telephone that I know works into the socket that marks the end of the phone company's responsibility for delivering service (everything between the socket and your ear is "internal" wiring that the phone company typically wants to milk you for). Nothing, except for that "empty" noise that tells you that the circuit is powered.
I called the phone company and, surpise!, they sent out a repair man within an hour or two. Having verified the state of affairs, the fellow disappeared until about 6 pm, when he came back up the driveway and announced that the problem was fixed. Hooray for people who know what they're doing!
It's getting late. I would have expected to be dead tired at the end of such a long day, but I'm not (don't get me wrong... I'm tired, no lie, but not exhausted). I've done about 1/3 of the job so far (according to the guy who sent it to me, who estimated the work at 21,000 words), and that's supported by the page count (I've done 10 of 31 pages), but it's always really tough to say for sure until you're well and truly done with the job.
Shannon has her dentist's appointment tomorrow in Durango, so I'll probably spend all of tomorrow afternoon at the store (indeed, maybe the entire day). I'm going to see if I can't get up in time to do the ham breakfast, since I have some questions about the local search-and-rescue service. If I then spend all day Saturday and Sunday working on this job (another weekend bites the dust!), I should be able to start off June with a nice invoice.
But mark this well: somewhere along the line, this mode of work has got to change!
