I reviewed about 35 pages and sent them in before going to the store this morning. The day was pretty uneventful, except for this one blustery German fellow who nearly burst a blood vessel when I tried to sell him a 70 cent stamp for a postcard to der Faterland. In broken English, he informed me that he'd been sending home postcards from all around the country, and putting 33 cent stamps on them, thank you.

He stormed out of the store before I could ask him if those mailed postcards ever got there. (I never put a return address on postcards mailed home from overseas, and from what I've seen pass through the store, few tourists to Pagosa do, either.)

Upon coming home after store closed, I sat right down and did the rest of the pages, wondering if anyone in Texas was going to do anything with the files today, or wait until Monday. It reminded me of one of the more egregious oubreaks of "clentism" among NASA types, back when I worked in Houston. This one guy wanted something translated within an impossible schedule (250 pages in 2 days, or something), with a deadline of 9 am Saturday. As deadlines go, that's a pretty strange one, at least for a person who is not trying to, say, catch a plane out of the country. It turned out the goofball wanted to make sure the document was complete and delivered before he set off on an overnight camping trip! (What a maroon!)

Anyway, after I finished sending off the last file, I decided that I was going to drive to Durango and shop at Office Depot (for some things we need at the store) and at Wal-Mart (for some groceries). It was nice to be able to focus my eyes on something more than an arm's length away, even if I was staring mostly into the sun on the way there, and kept my eyeballs peeled for suicidal deer for most of the way back.

A fellow came into the store today, to send off a flash memory card (one of the newer models), and he happened to mention how well it worked with his PDA, which - he noted - was really a 200-MHz computer. Having done some homework on the Sharp Zaurus 5500 (the one that runs Linux), I knew that plus-or-minus, the clock frequency was in the ballpark, so I asked if he owned one. He did, and boy, is he enthusiastic about it! His enthusiasm pretty much convinced me... now I just need the case and opportunity.

Tomorrow is an honest-to-goodness day off. Galina has some friends of ours coming over around 2 pm, probably to pick their brains about remodeling the house. Me, I plan to cook a bit in the morning and take it easy. Only if I get terminally bored will I review the 25 pages left to do for next week.

Cheers...
