I am SO screwed...
Oct. 13th, 2002 05:00 pmThere is a certain sense of relief that overcomes one when one realizes that - despite one's best efforts - one is screwed.
The paper chase has progressed, but not enough for me to see the light at the end of the tunnel on Tuesday. My only choice, that I can see, is to send Uncle Sugar as much cash as I can scrape up and apply for yet another extension... one that I feel will certainly be refused. The good news is that if I refrain from taking on additional work and do about five more days like today, I'll have my paperwork in the bag... mostly. I hope.
I now realize that part of my overall unease these past few days has been a subconscious knowledge that I didn't leave myself enough room in which to tango. Instead, I have accumulated a copious quantity of rope with which to - metaphorically speaking - hang myself. On the bright side, I've got to figure I can't possibly be the only dumbass in the United States to get myself in this kind of a jam.
I shall have to try to wrest some time from a CPA tomorrow and get some quick advice, which is akin to thinking about trying to reserve a fwe minutes of time on Santa Claus' calendar on December 24 to talk about Christmas planning alternatives.
* * * Some miscellaneous observations:
My new StarTAC does not, apparently, have the capability to allow a "hot" battery swap. With my old unit, if the battery started to beep (indicating imminent loss of power), you could - if you were adept enough - remove the old battery and slip in a new one within a second or so and not lose your connection. Not so with the new unit.
Also, when the battery dies on the new unit, no amount of pressing the PWR button will get it to eke out any sign of life. The old unit would, at least, power up about long enough to tell you your battery was "low" and then die.
The kids invited us over for dinner around 5:30 or 6, and then called a little while ago to ask if we could come sooner, as they'd like to go over and visit some friends. Unfortunately, Sasha has embarked on a really nasty set of seizures, so much so that we called the vet out on a Sunday to take the animal to the clinic. At last report, the animal had been sedated and was slowly coming around... at least that's what Galina told me, and we need to wait until about 5:30 or 6 to get the final word on whether Sasha is going to have to play "inpatient" tonight or not (I suspect not... vet bills can be almost as large as bills for humans, I've found).
Anyway... I'm going to stop shuffling paper right now and get a little rest. Later, or maybe tomorrow early in the morning, I will check the translation I did last week for client T and send it off... with an invoice. Lord knows, I'm going to need the money.
Cheers...
