All the world's a crate...
Feb. 14th, 2003 10:23 amAn unsual day, to be sure.
I took along the Valentine's Day candy that'd been lying around the house since Galina bought it at Sam's a while back, because I figured if we didn't dispose of it today, it would eventually find its way onto our respective hips (a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips!). Galina came up with the grand idea of giving it away. Bravo!
I also brought the crated set of antlers to the store, and it was a good thing, too, seeing as how the fellow who commissioned our sending them a while back came by the store to find out what the delay was all about. He was impressed with the crate, that's for sure.
One of the hazards, I've found, in dealing with trucking companies is that their quotes aren't worth the paper your typical oral contract is written on. It turns out the $169 quote we got from company A assumed we'd be handing over the box to them in Albuquerque. The new price (from Pagosa) was significantly higher. Company B was not much better, nor was company C.
So, we put it in the back of the van and Galina left around 1 pm to drive down to Albuquerque and send the blasted thing on its way.
This thing with transport companies seems to be a repeating phenomenon, and we keep getting burned, as a rule. (Our first such experience was with a box that was quoted at $160 or so, but when the bill came in, it was for $337. The reason for the increase was patiently explained to me - something to do with how our description of the box differed from its actual parameters - but I'm pretty sure I was snookered.)
Anyway, between Galina on the road and Jody gone for the day, I went back into the store around noon to help Drew out (Galina had a lunch date). I basically stayed until closing, which put my plans for the day on hold.
For dinner, I went over to the kids' place and we tried out some Omaha steaks that I'd ordered recently. The point of the exercise was not so much to eat dinner as it to do some research into whether Omaha steaks are better than what you get from your typical supermarket. (My opinion makes for a lousy data point, as I haven't eaten much red meat at all for a couple of months, and none at all - if you don't count some elk medallions - since the middle of January.) The general consensus was that Omaha steaks are superior.
Huntur continues to grow and develop by leaps and bounds. We spent quite a bit of time reading some books, and then she chased the cat around the house for fun. She is such a cutie!
Assuming Galina drove directly down to Albuquerque, dropped off the box, and then turned directly around to come back home, she should be coming up the driveway any minute. OTOH, it seems like such a shame to go all the way down to such an Important Outpost of Civilization and not stay overnight, so as to do a little shopping. Only time will tell.
I'm going to go hang out with Sasha and Ming.
Cheers...
