Treading molasses...
Feb. 16th, 2003 08:25 pmThat's sort of how I feel right about now.
The day was unremarkable. I got nothing much accomplished (cleaned the garage some, caught up on some paperchase items).
Spent a lot of time in front of this computer, that's for sure.
I cooked a reasonable dinner: elk mediallions with napa cabbage and mushrooms. Afterward, we drove over to the kids house, mainly so I could take a walk around the neighborhood. The recent precipitation (mostly rain) has turned the area around our place into mud, which is not much fun to slog through.
* * * There was an article in the local paper a couple of weeks ago about a newly formed chess club that meets downtown on Mondays after school. Most of the members, I suspect, are students (said suspicion based on photos accompanying the article). I think I'll go down tomorrow, anyway.
There is no upside to playing youngsters (unless, of course, you're a youngster yourself, or the youngster is a bona fide grandmaster prodigy). If you beat 'em, well... you're supposed to (being the more experience player, in theory, because most people equate age with experience) and you cannot lose that slight whiff of being thought a "meanie" for whacking a kid's ego if you win. If you lose, well... it becomes totally and completely a victory for the little tyke, who is universally acclaimed to be Full of Promise™. Worse, people snicker at you behind your back.
In any event, as I said, I'll be going downtown to see what's happening tomorrow. Supposedly, there's a tournament starting soon, too. That should be interesting.
Cheers...
