A pretty nice Friday...
Feb. 21st, 2003 08:38 pmI made it to the ham breakfast this morning, and that's always a treat. I don't recall much of the conversation, except that it was pretty trivial (one fellow talked about maybe acquiring a yagi antenna that weighs 7 tons, together with its base).
From there, I moved smoothly to the store, did the report, and then went home after going downtown to pick up the mail, coming back, and sorting it. At about this time, I started to look for the phone number of Shannon's folks, and couldn't find it. That put me in the uncomfortable position of having to wait for Drew to call and say they'd gotten to the Left Coast in one piece. (He called a couple of hours ago. They made it okay after driving through the night... and sleeping through the day.)
On the way back from the post office, I stopped by the Methodist Thrift Store. I can always depend on finding some good items there. Today, it was a salad washer (ours is in Houston, and I'm getting sick and tired of eating soggy salad greens), along with some classical CDs (including a 2-CD set of what I presume is an opera by Carl Maria von Weber, Der Freischütz, as well as some Chopin and Liszt) and my "undoing" for the day, a paperback by Alistair MacLean titled The Black Shrike.
I made the mistake of starting to read the book and could not put it down. (Warning! I am very easy to amuse, so don't go thinking this is some kind of deathless prose.) Fortunately, I read pretty fast, so between an hour nap and finishing the book, I got nothing done translation-wise until after I'd gone to the store again (to help deal with the UPS deadline at 4 pm) and come back.
Fortunately, my prediction as to the similarity of upcoming pages to pages done yesterday held. I managed to do yet another 12 pages of the job, in significantly less time than was required yesterday. That leaves 13 pages to go, so if I really apply myself, I ought to be able to finish the job (or nearly all of it) by the end of the day tomorrow, which will leave me with Sunday free. Too, I can split the work and have a couple of relatively easy days.
In any event, Drew is coming back on Monday. I also have my next doctor's appointment then.
Cheers...
