Putt-putting along...
Apr. 13th, 2003 06:08 pmSoon after sitting down to work this morning, Galina came by and suggested hustling off to see the kids, so we did. It was a lot of fun, actually, although I probably spoiled it for myself by allowing my mind to dwell on all the work I had to do by the end of the day.
The highlight of the trip was my taking Huntur for a stroll "around the block," so to speak, which Drew says is about a one-mile trek. It passed quickly. Quicker still was an oncoming walker - a woman somewhat older than I - whom we met at what I'd say was the "3 o'clock" point of the walk, and then again at the "11 o'clock" point. I wasn't exactly moseying along, which means the woman was walking fairly quickly.
As energizing as that walk was, it is really hard to talk to a kid when said kid is strapped into a stroller, facing forward. I tried to walk alongside the stroller, but it has a tendency to pull slightly to the left, which means constantly jiggling it to the right, which is best accomplished when you're walking directly behind the vehicle.
Yeah, I know... everyone should have problems like this.
I managed to get 6 pages done in an instant, owing to the fact that the 19-page document on my desk turned out to have - and I checked the incoming file - only 13 pages. How I ended up scrawling "19" for the page count is one of those many small mysteries of life, but I'll not complain, even though it will reduce my overall word count. It's not as if I had the pages to begin with.
I finished that 13-page document around 2:45 pm and lay down for a nap. When I got up, about an hour later, Drew had come by with Huntur, who was being her cute self with Galina. When I came out of my room, Huntur smiled and ran over to me to hug me. She is a little doll.
Drew was downstairs, sitting at my computer, and trying to enter names, etc. off a mailing list that one of the store's clients had brought in, with the idea that we put the names and addresses on a letter of hers (and envelopes) and then mail them for her. I replaced Drew at the keyboard and started up FineReader (which is a fine OCR program) and got the list imported a lot faster (and probably with many fewer errors) than if we'd continued to do the job by hand.
As of starting this post, the list is imported and proofread, and so is the client's letter, slightly edited.
I still need to ask the client a couple of questions about how, exactly, she wants the mailing to look. That, and a question or two about her penmanship with regard to some names added by hand at the end of the list.
With that interlude complete, the current status of the translation is this: I have 14 pages left to do. I also need to finish reviewing the item due first thing tomorrow. In general, the fewer pages I end up having to do tomorrow, the better (i.e., if I can nail, say, 7 pages tonight, that'll leave only 7 for tomorrow, which is only a couple of hours of work, after which I go into review mode for the assignment).
Cheers...
