...is not like it used to be. When I called home the other day to "warn" them I'd be passing through town, I was told by my dad that mom was in the hospital, which is where I visited her this morning, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

I also don't have much time, as I have to hie myself back to the airport, and this is the only terminal that's working at the Glen Cove Public Library.

The flights yesterday were tolerable. I've come to the conclusion that airline seats are designed to punish the lower lumbar region... I hope I survive the flight to Moscow tonight.

I exited from security at Dulles to pick up my passport and visa, then re-entered through the usual search. I am glad to report that I was not randomly selected for the Full Monty this time (knock wood).

Dulles depressed me. The air conditioning was on at what seemed 50%, and a lot of the commercial space was vacant. Of eateries, only a TGI Friday's, Pizza Hut and something called Vie de France survived. I had a salad at the Friday's, and was amused to be given a metal fork with a plastic knife. (Sigh.)

The final leg of the trip found me at JFK at somewhere past 11 pm. The air was on the crisp side and there was a marine tang in the air. As I waited for the shuttle from the Marriott, I noted that I had trouble orienting myself during the final approach... I've forgotten quite a bit about how the roads around JFK look in the decades since quitting the city for good. I also noted that the scene outside the terminal was a study in grays and silver, with the monotony only broken by the yellow cabs (which all look alike) and the ubiquitous orange construction cones.

This morning, I got up early and went back to the airport to rent a car and drive out to my folks' place. I'm on my way back to the airport now. I suppose there is a lot more I could write about, but time is short (or at least that's my perception).

I don't know when I'll next get access to the 'net, perhaps in Moscow, more likely in Kazakhstan. I'm off!

Cheers...
