When I was a boy, I remember reading a comic book in which a team of bad guys descend on the hero, intent on delivering great harm. In distinction from contemporary descriptions that would have the baddies trained as silent, wraith-like ninjas (i.e., something exotic), the hero's antagonists were part of an nondescript, crew-cut wearing organization in which efficiency was paramount, to the extent that the enlisted muscle had to get used to accomplishing all of their nefarious tasks in just 2,000 steps per day, or else... BOOM! (Discipline enforced by an explosive device hooked up to what I can only think is a pedometer.)

Well, today's stint before the computer limited me to about 2500 steps for the day, which I find to be as spectacularly low as I find the totals for other days - yesterday's 14400, for example - to be amazingly high. Anyway, the point of this diatribe - besides pointing out abysmal childhood reading habits - is to highlight the sedentary nature of the day as I mowed my way through 20 pages of... stuff. (Almost 6,000 words of it.)

I took a break in the middle of the day and happened across one of this month's HBO offerings: Road to Perdition, with Tom Hanks. I had my reservations about watching it when I first saw the title cross the screen on the program guide, but I found the movie to be well-plotted and well-acted, although the Frank Nitti in the film was a far cry from the character I remember in old episodes of The Untouchables, who seemed aptly nicknamed "The Enforcer." While entertaining, I would not classify this film in the category of "must see again anytime soon," probably because the characters all had a point to make, and then made it.

After slogging through 20 pages of translation, I am not in a chomping-at-the-bit mood to do a review prior to sending the finished file off for a 7 am deadline tomorrow morning. I've already formatted the thing and spell checked it; I plan to rise early tomorrow and do a final read-through before leaving for the store (and to return the rent-a-car).

I think I will go upstairs and see if there is anything else worth my attention on the idiot tube. I'll lay odds there isn't.

Cheers...
