I should learn to read...
Jan. 12th, 2004 10:35 pmSo I arrive at the MCC this morning and find, to my chagrin, that someone else is doing the day shift at space-to-ground. Now, conceivably, this could have been the result of a double-assignment, but if not, it meant two alternatives: either I had no assigned work (which was an unpleasant thought), or worse, I did have an assignment somewhere else that I was not aware of (an even more unpleasant thought).
I spent a couple of strained minutes trying to get at my work authorization, only to find that it ended yesterday, so I called the office to make sure I wasn't leaving someone else high and dry. Apparently, I wasn't, so after a little while, I gravitated to my client's office to do some in-house translation work. Five hours and three documents later, my mood had deteriorated to the point where I left for home, where I took a nap and set about addressing things that were important (though not, in the classical Franklin Quest sense, urgent).
Part of my frustration with the day lay with having to be reminded of the translation job that I agreed to do for the 15th. When that happened, I felt a stab of panic, thinking momentarily that the work was due sooner than it could be done, as I have not lifted a finger as of yet to address it. In fact, it made me think my planning is a little lightweight (something I addressed a bit earlier in the evening, which underscores the importance of spending time planning every day).
It is nearly 11 pm and I am wondering whether I should start translating now or not. I'm leaning toward "not," simply because I still have two days and a morning in which to address the issue, which ought to be sufficient to deal with about 6K words.
* * * I have almost completely acclimated to the new VAIO. As the unit has a smaller footprint, some compromises had to be made with the keyboard, which would be my primary complaint (the arrow keys must be shifted with Fn to be used for the PgUp/PgDn/etc. functions), but in general, I'm pleased. In fact, I'm really liking the availability of the CD burner and the built-in wireless, not to mention a battery that keeps its charge for more than an hour.
* * * I'm on disc 7 of the Thomas Spanish CD series, and despite the fact I am not actually conversing in Spanish, I believe the daily routine of two 25-minute sessions to and from the Clear Lake area is improving my comprehension of the written Spanish word. I have run across a blog named Cuaderno de bitácora ("logbook," if my references are correct), and find that the host shares many of the same interests as yours truly. I am still in the exploring stage, following up on various links, and enjoying the experience and I believe it will not take me too long to figure out whether and to what extent our views on said interests coincide. (Similar views may be a happy result, but the point of the exercise is to learn, which is always a happy result.)
