A fairly productive day...
Jan. 13th, 2004 11:02 pmMost of the things accomplished today directly address bill paying, including a (non) lunch hour that consisted of stopping by the local Wells Fargo bank, getting some checks printed (at a buck apiece!), and then running around like a madman writing checks to various folks. Upon returning home, I was faced with addressing some faxes from Galina, courtesy of the company through which we're trying to refinance the Pagosa house.
Those faxes will be handled tomorrow morning.
I don't know what's happened in the intervening years, but I find that incorporating graphics into translations is getting no easier. In fact, it seems to just get harder as the years roll by.
Back about 10 years ago, I used to fax stuff to myself in order to implement a scanning capability for diagrams that appeared on the paper documents I received for translation. The ability to do that kind of digital "wizardry" helped in the marketing end of the business in the early-mid 90s. Today, of course, most people expect that and a lot more as a matter of course.
(Would you believe there are still a few people out there who have not advanced to the stage of typing their translations (like, on a typewriter)? I kid you not! Of course, such people don't generally make a living at this kind of work, either.)
This latest job has a lot of work to do and the client is very particular. The work involves using Corel Draw and about three other programs and as many intermediate steps. The idea is to come up with a graphic that can be fairly easily edited, if necessary, and I find it slows me down tremendously. Maybe with practice...
I need to sit down and strategize how I'm going to do my job as Administrator of the ATA's Slavic Language Division. Experience tells me that exhorting people to participate in online forums is not the way to go, and unless some folks step up to the plate and volunteer, there isn't much that one or two people are going to be able to do. I suspect I may have to pick up the phone and start "reaching out and touching" individual members. More on this later, as it's getting pretty late.
I got started pretty late on the translation due Thursday, and am better than 1/3 of the way through (actually, 500 words short of halfway). I'm going to have to press down harder on the accelerator if I'm to make the deadline. At any rate, I'm going to sleep on it.
