Huntur has been chronically sick with some kind of respiratory thing for several months, it seems. Then a day or two ago, the kids moved her bed and noticed that the bathroom (probably the toilet) has been leaking into her room. Then yesterday, Shannon took Huntur to get x-rayed and radiologist reported that it looked as if the child might have a touch of bronchial pneumonia, so the whole family went to Durango to get a professional opinion.

It's a funny thing about pneumonia. Over the course of my life up until about six months ago, I've probably heard of maybe a half dozen cases cropping up among people I know, and since then it seems as though everyone is coming down with it. Of course, my evidence is not even of anecdotal quality, but still...

Galina returned the rental and picked up the Ford, which clears the way for her to go to Texas, but with Huntur being sick (and Anna out West with her in-laws and the kids), that'd leave only me to staff the store, so I don't know.

I spent most of the day at the store, returning at about 4:20 pm. I tried to nap, but couldn't.

I received the camera card for the Zaurus, and so far, about the only decent picture it took was a close-up (from 6 cm). Ordinary pictures have a lot of noise in them if there's not enough light, and if there is enough light, I either still have not acquired the knack of focusing the lens or there is nothing to acquire and the unit just generally sucks. I'll experiment with it for another day or two, but if nothing improves, I might try exchanging it for a new unit from the fellow I bought it from, but that's not necessarily a gimme.

One side effect of having the camera on the Z was editing the httpd.conf file to alias the directory containing the photos so I could access them via a web browser. At first, I tried to create a link that pointed at the directory with the snaps, but that did not work very well at all. Then I read the Apache documentation and aliased the directory, but that didn't work either.

I got to thinking that my problem lay with the permissions on the directory, and that turned out to be the right path. Not only must the photo directory be world readable and executable, but so must the entire hierarchy up to the root directory.

Once I did that, I had an opportunity to take a look at the snaps I took in broad daylight, and they were overexposed and uniformly out of focus.

However, I really don't have the luxury of spending time on this right now. Working at the store all day means having to basically translate all night (or for at least 3-4 hours), so I better get cracking.

Cheers...

UPDATE: The kids are back from Durango. It's not pneumonia, but RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), which is apparently a common and leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections in infants and small children.

UPDATE (30 Jan): It would appear I am a glutton for misinformation. Huntur doesn't have RSV, either. (And may I pause here to say: Hurrah!) Apparently, the tyke suffers from some kind of asthma-like symptoms.
