Here's an example of what I was talking about yesterday. Maybe it's me, but I'm pretty sure the Russian original isn't quite up to snuff:
Обходные галереи на отм. 7.20.11.4 и 15.60 консоль - обходной балкон вдоль оси "А" с вылетом 2.4м от оси А, выполняется ребристой ж/б плитой. Ребра - консоли с шагом 1500м переменного сечения от 300 до 450h и плитой h = 100мм, обвязочная балка сеч. 300x300мм из бетона кл. В30 (М400), арматура кл. АIII (35ГС).
I rendered this as follows:
Runaround galleries at elevations 7.20, 11.4 and 15.60 are cantilevered runaround balconies along axis A that extend 2.4-m past axis A and which are of ribbed reinforced concrete slab construction. The ribs are brackets located at intervals of 1500 mm with cross sections that vary from 300 to 450h; the slab has h = 100 mm, and the 300x300 mm concrete framing beam is made of class V30 (M400) concrete and class AIII (35GS) rebar.
I am doing a lot of "interpretation" here, trying to figure out the sense of the sentence without letting the actual wording get in the way. :^) The only thing I'm really sure of is my fix of a couple of typos.

Elevations, you see, are given typically as a number to two decimal places, which makes 15.60 okay, but 7.20.11.4 not okay (these numbers denote a height above some datum level, defined as 0.00). The building has three floors, however, and 11.4 is exactly between 7.20 and 15.60, so I'm pretty sure what I have is what was intended, as is my take on the rib interval given in the original (1500 mm, instead of 1500 m, which is a kilometer and a half!).

Anyway, it's time to stop whining and get back to work. I'm almost one-fifth of the way through today's chunk.

Cheers...

I only really noticed this morning that I had completely missed keeping myself informed of who was playing in the Super Bowl. Of course, as soon as I realized this, I could not help but pay attention to the morning news broadcast, which blissfully dispelled my ignorance.

Both assertions have got to be some kind of comment on my state of mind.

And since when has there been a football team in Carolina?

Cheers...

I get the feeling I could have done more translation today, but as it stands, I've laid 4300 words down on phosphor, and that's enough.

In the meantime, I managed to cook up a pot of borshch with Galina in the morning. We also used the juicer she ordered some time ago for the second time. Moreover, I was upstairs a little while ago and watched the first quarter of The Game with Galina.

All in all, I've been up and down the stairs some today. And I'm happy about that.

The current translation, BTW, is not going to weigh in at anywhere near what was originally advertised (12-15K target words, if memory serves). Heck, it's probably not going to break 9,000 words, although the last few pages are going to eat time since they are rather complicated graphics. Sigh.

Anyway, the morning dawned on something less than an inch of new snow at our elevation. If I overheard Galina speaking with Drew correctly, there's about a foot of new snow up on the mountain. I was able to get rid of the white stuff fairly quickly, after which I took the car and visited the store, fed the fish, and did a little shopping.

Galina is preparing to leave tomorrow, apparently, so again I'm going to wrap this up and go upstairs.

Cheers...
