Sweating out Saturday...
Mar. 20th, 2004 09:28 pmI was able to crank out about 2/3 of a translation this morning before leaving for the store, and finished the item once I got back. My eagle-eyed assessment of 3,000 words was only about 100% too high (the actual count is more like 1600 words), so I "turned to" around the place and did some cleaning, making several trips with the Honda filled with, um, garbage. My spirit just wasn't up to doing more work after a full day at the store (a harbinger, I suspect, of the week to come).
In any event, I finally got sick and tired of looking at the Norton splash screen on the new VAIO, so I bit the bullet and went through the configuration process, learning en passant that there are 167 programs on my machine capable of intercourse over the Internet. (That made me so happy... I have no idea what about half of them are, and wonder why another third would ever want to initiate a conversation over the network. Now I'm wondering what, exactly, the Norton software is going to do to help manage this herd of applications.) The program is good for 3 months, at which point I'll doubtless be asked to subscribe to the service. We'll see.
In other news, my editor for the dictionary review apparently liked my review, which is a relief. He asked me to supply some additional data, which resulted in my being completely surprised when, after doing a little research, I found the list price of the dictionary (which comes as a set of two volumes, English-to-Russian and Russian-to-English) to be $325. I had been under the impression that each volume was about $100 (which is still pretty stiff, if you ask me, especially considering the competition from online dictionaries) and it didn't even occur to me that they wouldn't be available separately. I also am not entirely sure why one would want to effectively force people to buy both volumes, especially considering the stiff price. Personally, the English-to-Russian dictionaries I own generally don't turn out to be very useful, since I don't work in that direction (and most translators I know only work in one direction for any given language pair). Then again, perhaps I'm missing something and there may be some hidden (to me) advantage in owning the E-to-R and R-to-E versions of the same dictionary.
I had been toying with the idea of going out with Drew tomorrow to see what-all his new passion for paintball is about, but I suspect I'll have to stay in pretty much all day to lay at least 4,000 words down on phosphor. Then again, I have all day to accomplish that goal, so maybe I can spend an hour or two loafing.
Monday is looking to be a full day of work. The kids leave for the AMPC show on Tuesday.
