Pressed for time... (as usual)
May. 4th, 2004 01:29 pmYesterday's drive to Colorado with Galina was not anywhere near as tiring as when I drove it all myself. We swapped seats every few hours and the drive only started becoming a drag in the last hour or two, after we stopped at something called the Seven Cities of Gold casino, which is located north of Española, for a run at their buffet.
By the time we'd passed Española, we had gotten pretty hungry, though I was wary of loading up on food, since I've found that full stomachs have a tendency to cause nodding heads. We went in past what looked like the corner of one of the smaller (and less affluent) casinos in Las Vegas - filled with penny slot machines with paying customers in front of many of them - and forked over about $7 each for a so-so buffet (I thought the salad bar was very good; the main courses... didn't kill us).
The excitement for the trip occurred shortly after making the turn for Pagosa Springs at Chama, New Mexico. An elk just slightly smaller than the Queen Mary jumped out in front of us as we zoomed down highway 84, and though we were never in any real danger, it was unsettling enough to cause me to slow down significantly as we drove the last 40 miles or so of our 1060-mile trip.
Galina and I slept well. So far today, it's been rush-rush-rush. I've made sure to get my meds and fire up the new Amex card (the old one went belly up last Saturday), have been layout out what I'm going to take with me (with an eye toward realistically minimizing its volume), and the washing machine has been going pretty much nonstop since this morning.
Huntur is here right now. We'd gone to the store to see what Drew had done with the layout (he'd told us it had changed), and I'm impressed. One of the major improvements has been the addition of 32 new mailboxes. In any event, the whole place just looks good. (Galina's going to have to deal with a pile of mail, though. I'm not sure I'm going to have the time even to merely flip through the envelopes.)
Back into the fray!
Cheers...
