The focus of the day for me was my presentation on the Russian Internet (aka, Runet). It turns out I left Colorado without either PowerPoint file on my laptop, which is some kind of first for me. I did put "backup" copies up on the web, so it's not like I was completely out of luck in that department, but the gaffe was a portent of things to come.

The hotel was supposed to furnish an LCD projector, one of those devices that plug into a computer and which throw an image of the display onto a projection screen. No such equipment was furnished, so I basically had to do my presentation "a capella." In the end, I lost track of my time, and ended up only about half way through my presentation by the time my time was up.

By this time in the day, I was way past being not a happy camper.

When the conference day was over, I hied myself back to my hotel to change and go back to the Sheraton to help direct people to the restaurant for what I personally consider to be a high point of the conference experience: the SLD dinner.

Personally, I am not in a good mood about the dinner, but then again, being the fella who organized the thing, I took a more-than-passive interest in everything coming off well, so little things had a tendency to upset me. Things got off to a bad start when the restaurant, which has an occupancy limit of 40 persons, basically ran up against a group that wanted to have 42 people in the place. A former officer of the division (heck, of the ATA) stepped up to the plate and volunteered to take the overflow to another restaurant, which was helpful, but I felt uptight all night long, as the service was pretty uneven. I feel I didn't do a good job negotiating the deal, as the bar tab ran almost as much, for some tables, as the tab for the meals.

Anyway... Tomorrow, I do my wiki presentation and preside over the annual meeting of the division. Frankly, I'm looking forward to the end of the conference, and may set off for the US after the division meeting tomorrow, but maybe I'll feel different in the morning.

Cheers...
