Nov. 16th, 2004 06:52 pmThings went fairly smoothly yesterday, starting with my late-ish departure from the house. In fact, the only wrinkle in getting to Houston was arriving at IAH about 10 minutes late. The car rental place had no compact cars, so they gave me an SUV that has all the grace of an arthritic hippopotamus.
Generally, my first act in a new rental car in Houston is to tune in KRTS, one of the two classical stations in town (the other being the public radio station just a little ways down the dial). I was surprised to find a Spanish-language station in the spot instead. (In fact, I listened long enough to make out the new call letters and frequency, announced in Spanish.) I just checked the Internet, and it would appear that the station has changed hands, and that the formerly independent station is now part of the Radio One "stable."
Some people will doubtless call it progress, but I am disappointed.
Today was my first day back in Building 4S in quite a while. There are still signs up in the corridor that leads from the parking lot to the elevators celebrating the return of the ISS-9 crew (Padalka and Fincke). My job is to help support a planning meeting for the rest of this week. I had some concerns about being able to just jump right in, cold, and work such a theme, but none so serious as to cause me to consider not taking the job. Generally, any shortcomings in terminology are worked out in the first few hours, and there is also a fairly deep well of experience I have upon which to draw. At any rate, I have no major complaints about today's performance.
Dinner was a mixture of fried shittake mushroom slices, seaweed (unknown type... Chinese origin), tofu, and... something else with buckwheat noodles. I cooked. The ladies ate. We all had a good time.
Now to go wind down.
