There is a heater in my room that, I believe, looks a little like a steam radiator but is filled with some kind of oil and a heat-transfer medium. The heater is mounted on wheels and has four settings controlled by two switches (think binary!). I had this heater on pretty much all the time upon arriving at the hotel and only turned it off after my lugage arrived (I used the heater as a dryer for my underwear and socks).

One of the unfortunate side-effects of having the heater on all the time is having a room full of air that has a very low relative humidity. (People sometimes call this dry air, except that heating cold air doesn't dry it, but instead increases the air's capacity to hold more water, which encourages evaporation of liquids exposed to the air.) So a few nights ago, I turned off the heater completely, expecting the room to turn cold after a few hours.

It didn't.

In fact, the environment in the room is quite pleasant and I find I am sleeping better.

Sleeping better, on the other hand, doesn't mean I'm sleeping at the top of my form. There are floodlights on the roof of the Fili that remain on at night, illuminating the trees that are planted in front of the building. Last night, I awoke to a howling wind and saw the trees bent over rather severely in front of my window.

Right now, there is a marvelous fog outside that keeps visibility down to a few hundred yards. I certainly wouldn't want to try finding my way around here while this fog is around, either during the day or the night.

A couple of days ago, overhearing one of the ILS folks talk about the TV channels available in his room, I determined that one could manipulate the channel assignments for the set in the room and set about changing them to something more palatable to my taste. (I mean, if I'm going to watch TV, it may as well be Russian and French channels for the language practice, right?)

I shoulda left well enough alone. The procedure is not as neat as it usually is on sets in the US, and now I have way too many BBC and Discovery channels. Blyeah. Oh well, I suppose I can simply leave it as a headache for the next occupant of the room.

Cheers...
