Another day in the cold...
Jan. 11th, 2005 07:23 pmI suppose one can say the day formally started around 3 am, when someone at the party being thrown on the occasion of today's departure of several team members (subsumed by the marvelously compact Russian word "проводы") decided to key the microphone of his radio a few times so that the rest of us could get the full impact of the crowd's singing.
No matter. Aside from the initial shock (and concomitant uncharitable thoughts), it was good to hear people having fun.
The morning meeting started with the usual innocuous information, except that today's weather forecast made everyone come awake real fast, if for no other reason than to remember where they kept their thermal underwear. While the air temperature here the past couple of days has flirted with (but not gone below) freezing, the local meteorologists predict temperatures around these parts will fall to below -30°C, perhaps as low as -40°C, sometime next week.
The only good thing about -40°C is that you don't have to do any math to convert to Farenheit temperature. At that temperature, -40°C equals -40°F. The good news is that the air won't feel any colder at that temperature (apparently, the skin's ability to distinguish temperature differences is negligible once you get a little below freezing); the bad news is that the exposure danger at such temperatures is elevated, all the more so if any wind is blowing.
However, we will cross that bridge when we come to it. I think I am adequately prepared.
Work went swimmingly today, up until about 10 minutes to the end of my shift, when I was called upon to support a fairly lengthty telephone conference. It was no big deal, of course; not as if I'd been panting at the face of the salt seam for the previous 20 hours, but still worthy of note. I'm the early person into the office tomorrow, which also involves a spot of into-Russian translation and coverage of the morning meeting.
Time to go off and relax.
