I spent some time yesterday researching this "90 days without registration" claim that was bandied about regarding foreigners in the Russian Federation, and while I was able to confirm that Ukrainian nationals can live in the RF for up to 90 days without having to register, and that - more recently - Russian citizens achieved parity with Ukrainians and may now temporarily reside someplace other than their official residence for up to 90 days, nothing I've found says the same time limit applies to foreigners in general.

Technically, I suppose, I could try to register my presence at the appropriate office in my sister-in-law's neighborhood, but my experience has been that nothing is ever quite so simple. Indeed, one of the native Russians supporting the campaign doubted very much that anything could be accomplished in less than a week.

However, besides the apparent lack of legal grounds for staying in Russia (which pretty much wins game, set and match by itself), I don't feel comfortable asking to stay at my sister-in-law's for almost two weeks, keeping in mind Poor Richard's observation about guests and fish. A hotel would be too expensive. I could conceivably just pop out of the country and stay in Europe for the interim, but to do that I'd want to have Galina with me, which is not really feasible right now.

Too, it is possible that the satellite rework may take longer than expected, which would extend the hiatus, and if the rework were to take a lot longer, the campaign might very well be completely rescheduled for much later, since the new schedule launches the satellite somewhere in mid-September, fairly close to the start of the next campaign.

The risk of an extended hiatus, however, is such as to not deter a number of people from planning on leaving much of their stuff in Baikonur (the hotel has graciously agreed to let the team do that). I don't know if I'm going to go along with the general consensus on this, though I am leaning toward the idea (packing all my stuff back and forth is not my idea of fun).

I will have to get on the phone to the airline, probably this afternoon or tomorrow, after speaking with my client, through whom I work for the launch team. In the meantime, there's plenty of work to do between now and when we leave on Friday.

Cheers...
