Today's fast track...
Oct. 18th, 2005 10:02 amNot your run-of-the-mill kind of day so far, no sir.
On the way to the store this morning, I spied an unusual object by the side of our road; it turned out to be a small eruption of shaggy manes. Feht had told me that mushrooms have been few and far between in our neck of the woods this year, so when I came back from the store a few minutes later, I stopped to take a look at the shaggies, weighed the hazard of eating them (very light motor vehicle traffic on the road, no chemical spraying) and decided to blow off a no-food Tuesday by picking four of the specimens to go with a couple of fried eggs.
Later, as I rooted through some unopened mail looking for a phone bill, I found a client check for a fairly substantial sum mailed over a month ago (bangs head against table, recalling recent efforts to keep bank accounts from all crashing simultaneously). The good news is that my check for the Baikonur job is in the mail, which means we'll be flush for at least a couple of days until the Usual Collection of Vampires™ gets its act together to drain my bank account yet again. The oversight with the month-old check, however, is a reminder that IYWSDRDIY™.
There was an article in yesterday's USA Today, purporting to analyze how technologically "with it" folks are in the U.S., on a county-by-county basis. Indicators of tech savvy include having bought a PDA, phoning someone via VoIP, and accessing the Internet via DSL. Interesingly, Archuleta county ranks in the 17.9%-28.9% category, on a household basis, which is higher than surrounding counties (curiously, neighboring La Plata county, which seems filled to the brim with college students, is only in the 8%-17.9% category). Of course, without knowing some additional details about how the data was collected and evaluated, it's hard to figure out how meaningful this survey is, but hey! this comes from USA Today and should be accepted unquestioningly, right?
Cheers...
