A breather, sort of...
Dec. 18th, 2005 07:16 pmPeople with a conventional 9-to-5 office job are used to having two-day weekends. The same is not true for small business owners, who typically are open six and often seven days per week. Our store is open six days a week, and it's been a pretty rough season for Drew and Galina. Tomorrow marks the "home stretch" of the Christmas season, and despite the fact that business this year is off from previous years (continuing a trend for the past few years, as locals increasingly turn to online vendors, who take care of the nuisance of shipping whatever gifts they've bought for out-of-town recipients).
Anyway, today was a full day off, if you don't count having had Huntür visit us.
We did a lot of things, including cook some soup, make some pudding, watch a couple of animated films on a DVD I bought in Russia, and just carry on in general. By about 1 pm, I was ready for a nap, myself, but Huntür... wasn't. I think we had a lot of fun, and I will definitely sleep soundly tonight.
It's looking to be a pretty full week. Natalie will be flying in to Albuquerque on Friday and staying with us for a few days, and everyone is looking forward to that. Galina will be picking up an order of boxes in Durango tomorrow morning (we're pretty much out), and after I get some invoices out tomorrow morning, I'll be making myself busy packaging some paintings that are overdue for shipment and helping out at the store.
I ran across our humidifier earlier today and tried cleaning the filter, with middling success. After reinstalling the filter and running the unit for about 10 minutes, there was still no vapor coming out of it, so I suspect it's broken. What is causing it to malfunction, I don't know. I suspect the filter may simply need replacement, so I plan to stop by the Ace tomorrow and see if they have anything I can use. During a conversation with Feht yesterday, he stresssed how important it was to keep the air inside the house moist, which is something that was driven home to me last night, when I woke up in the middle of the night with my mouth and nose feeling utterly dry and uncomfortable.
The Discovery channel had a program on a little while ago about last year's tsunami in the Indian Ocean. It was pretty much the first time I'd seen any footage of that disaster (recall I was in Baikonur when it happened last year, where I didn't watch the tube much) and one thing that kept running through my mind as I watched the home videos of the cascading water was, "Why is this jerk still filming?" I like to think that if I was in a situation where the lives of my spouse and two children was at extreme risk, I'd be more interested in making sure they stayed safe than in recording the event for posterity. Criminy.
My elbow still feels a little funny from yesterday's fall, but besides that and some scabs on my calf, I seem to be none the worse for wear. I need to do some puttering, and then get a good night's sleep. Big day tomorrow.
Cheers...
